Continuous Casting Segment
Continuous Casting Process Working Principle
High-temperature molten steel is continuously poured into one or a group of water-cooled copper crystallizer, and the molten steel gradually solidifies into a blank shell along the periphery of the crystallizer. When the liquid level of the steel rises to a certain height and the blank shell solidifies to a certain thickness, the blank is pulled out by a straightening machine, cooled by spraying water in the secondary cooling zone to completely solidify the blank, and cut to length by a cutting device according to the requirements of steel rolling. This process of casting high-temperature molten steel directly into billet is called continuous casting.

General continuous casting machine consists of molten steel carrying device (ladle, turntable), tundish and its replacement device, crystallizer and its vibration device, secondary cooling zone clamping roller and cooling water system, drawing straightener, cutting equipment, dummy bar device, etc.

What Is The Difference Between Direct Casting And Continuous Casting
Direct casting method
mainly refers to the direct one-step forming of the mold shell and core for casting by RP technology. After the mold shell and core are treated, metal casting can be carried out to cast metal parts. Because there is no modeling transformation from prototype to metal parts, it is called direct casting method. This kind of technology is generally used for the manufacture of single and complex parts. Direct shell casting is a method of sintering ceramic powder coated with reactive resin by laser selective sintering, which can make shell and core for casting in one step. In CAD environment, the part pattern is directly converted into shell type, and then the gating system is equipped.
Continuous casting
It is an advanced casting method. Its principle is that molten metal is continuously poured into a special metal mold called a crystallizer, and the solidified (crusted) casting is continuously pulled out from the other end of the crystallizer, which can obtain castings of any length or a specific length.

Compared with ordinary casting, continuous casting has the following advantages:

The rapid development of continuous casting technology is a very noticeable trend in the development of contemporary iron and steel industry.

The rapid development of continuous casting is mainly due to its greater technical and economic advantages compared with traditional ingot mould casting, mainly in the following aspects.
  • The quality of the casting blank is good

Because of the rapid cooling speed of continuous casting, continuous casting and controllable and stable casting conditions, the internal structure of the slab is uniform and dense, with less segregation and stable properties. The plate rolled by continuous casting billet is superior to die casting in transverse performance, deep drawing performance and other performance indexes. In recent years, continuous casting has been used to produce slabs with no surface defects, which are directly hot-rolled into steel.
Continuous casting steel is a systematic project, involving a series of processes such as steelmaking, steel rolling, refractories, energy, spare parts, production organization and management.
  • Improving working conditions, and easy to realize automation

The mechanization and automation of continuous casting are relatively high, and the continuous casting process has been automatically controlled by computer, which frees the operators from heavy manual labor. In recent years, with the development of science and technology and the improvement of automation level, electronic computers are also used for the control of continuous casting production, all of which are controlled by computers except the casting operation. For example, the slab caster of Baosteel in China uses five PFU-1500 computers for on-line control, which has 3l control functions, such as cutting length calculation, compression casting control, electromagnetic stirring setting, on-line width adjustment of crystallizer, quality management, secondary cooling water control, process data collection, slab casting, tracking, finishing line selection, flame cleaning, slab printing label and weighing, and various report printing.
  • Saving energy consumption

According to relevant information, producing 1 ton continuous casting billet saves 627 ~ 1046 kJ compared with die casting cogging, which is equivalent to 21.4~35.7kg standard coal. In addition, the energy consumption saved by increasing the yield is more than 100kg standard coal. According to China's energy consumption level, the comprehensive energy saving per ton of continuous casting billet is about 130kg standard coal.
  • Improve the yield of metal

The yield from molten steel to billet by ingot mould casting is about 84-88%, while that by continuous casting is about 95-96%, so the metal can be saved by 7-12% by continuous casting, which is a considerable figure. One of the important reasons why Japan's steel industry is competitive in the world is the large-scale adoption of continuous casting in the steel industry. Since 1985, the continuous casting ratio in Japan has exceeded 90%. For expensive special steel and stainless steel, the economic value of continuous casting is even greater. After the second steelmaking plant of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company replaced die casting, the cost per ton of billet was reduced by about l70 yuan, and the annual income was about 1.35 billion yuan based on the annual output of 8 million tons. It can be seen that improving the metal yield and simplifying the production process will obtain considerable economic benefits.
  • Simplify the production process

Because continuous casting can save the process of initial rolling and cogging, it not only saves the energy consumption of soaking pit heating, but also shortens the cycle time from molten steel to billet. In recent years, one of the main developments of continuous casting is the trend of casting billets close to the cross-sectional size of finished products, which will simplify the process of steel rolling.
